What Are Eating Disorders?

Eating disorders are serious mental health conditions characterized by abnormal eating habits, extreme concerns about body weight and shape, and often a distorted body image. They can have severe physical, emotional, and social consequences.
Eating disorders also affect people of all genders, ages, ethnicities, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Each eating disorder is complex and may vary from person to person.

What is the role of medication when treating eating disorders?

Medication can play a role in the treatment of eating disorders, but it is important to note that it is generally not a standalone treatment. Eating disorders are complex mental health conditions that require a comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach. Treatment often involves a combination of therapy, nutritional counseling, and, when necessary, medication.

Commonly Prescribed Medications

Antidepressants: Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) and other antidepressant medications may be prescribed to help manage symptoms of depression and anxiety, which are common co-occurring conditions with eating disorders.

  • Antipsychotics: In some cases, atypical antipsychotic medications may be used to address distorted thinking patterns, reduce anxiety, and help stabilize mood.

  • Mood stabilizers: These medications can be used to manage mood swings and emotional instability that may be present in eating disorder patients.

  • Anti-anxiety medications: Benzodiazepines or other anti-anxiety medications may be prescribed to help reduce severe anxiety or panic attacks in certain situations.

  • Appetite stimulants: These medications are occasionally used in cases where individuals are struggling with severe anorexia nervosa to help increase their appetite and support weight restoration.

The specific medications prescribed for eating disorders can vary depending on the type of eating disorder and the individual’s unique circumstances. It is crucial to emphasize that medication alone is not a cure for eating disorders, and it should always be used in conjunction with other evidence-based treatments.

Our Medical Director, Andrea Beckstrom, MSN, PMHNP-BC was fortunate enough to sit down with two eating disorder specialists, Hannah  Lollar, LCSW from and Skyline Healing, LCSW from Gold Counseling, and our very own Megan Konopacke, MSN, FNP-C. Andrea, Hannah, and Megan dove into statistics, treatment options, misconceptions, stigmas, and more encompassing eating disorders.
