Introducing Dr. Austin Heaps: LÉVO’s New South Weber Clinical Director and Mental Health Provider

LÉVO is excited to welcome Dr. Austin Heaps, a doctorate-prepared psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner, as our new Clinical Director at the South Weber location. Dr. Heaps brings a wealth of experience, empathy, and a holistic approach to mental health care, making him a valuable addition to our team and the communities we serve.

A Passion Fueled by Experience

Dr. Heaps’ passion for mental health care is deeply personal. Inspired by his own lived experiences and those of family and friends, he understands the profound impact mental health has not only on individuals but also on their loved ones. “Everyone deserves a better quality of life,” he shares, “because mental health impacts every part of our lives.”

Serving Diverse Populations

With a background spanning work with adolescents, young adults, older adults, and veterans, Dr. Heaps values the diversity of his patients. He finds meaning in helping people at every stage of life, recognizing that each chapter brings unique challenges and opportunities for growth.

His time working with veterans at the VA was especially formative. Dr. Heaps notes the resilience and adaptability ingrained in military populations, but also acknowledges the unique struggles they face. He is passionate about helping veterans, and all patients, rediscover their strengths and navigate life’s transitions.

Breaking Down Barriers to Care

Dr. Heaps is committed to breaking the stigma around seeking help for mental health. He recognizes that many people, especially those with a background in the military, may feel pressure to “tough it out” or avoid asking for help. “No one got where they are without help or direction,” he says. At LÉVO, Dr. Heaps strives to create a safe, nonjudgmental space where patients can share even the smallest part of their struggles and begin the journey toward healing.

A Comprehensive Approach: Medication and Beyond

As a provider, Dr. Heaps specializes in medication management but emphasizes that medication is just one tool among many. He is a strong advocate for considering medication when mental health challenges significantly impact daily life, but he also works with patients to explore other crucial aspects of wellness: exercise, nutrition, sleep, and supportive therapy.

He is eager to dispel myths about medication, reminding patients that, like a bandage, medication can promote healing and stability, sometimes temporarily, sometimes long-term, always tailored to the individual’s needs.

What to Expect as a Patient

Dr. Heaps’ approach is rooted in empathy, connection, and collaboration. He takes time to get to know each patient, understand their goals and values, and build a relationship based on trust. Initial appointments focus on understanding concerns and ruling out underlying issues, while follow-ups track progress and adjust care as needed.

He works closely with therapists, primary care providers, and other members of the care team to ensure patients receive comprehensive, collaborative support. “We want to provide resources so that you get all-around treatment—not just medications, but the therapy and support you need to work on the hard stuff, too.”

A Provider Who Practices What He Preaches

Outside of work, Dr. Heaps maintains his own mental health through spending time with his family, regular exercise, self-development, and time spent outdoors, often on horseback, which he calls “clearing the cobwebs.” He brings this same commitment to growth and balance to his work with patients.
